Workshop 4: Using administrative data as a basis to communicate university research identity

Time: Half day: 09:00 - 12:30
Presenters: Simon Porter, Information Manager (Research), eScholarship Research Centre, University of Melbourne
Ken Richardson, Executive Officer (Research), University of Queensland
Abstract:

In late 2006, both the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland produced public research portals based on administrative data from central administrative systems, including Human Resources, Finance, Research, and Student Systems. The purpose of these portals is to publicly communicate the research of each researcher, and in the case of UQ, the research profile of each research group and organisational unit. The intended audience for the research portal include the media, industry, potential graduate students, and other researchers.

As well as a exploring these two systems, the following discussion points will be workshopped:

  • How to sell the vision for a Research Portal in a University?
  • How are other Universities tackling the research portal space?
  • Where should the line be drawn between public and private data?
  • Can a research portal replace/encompass a universities media portal?
  • What are the associated difficulties in repurposing administrative data for the public?
  • What is the cost of running a research portal project and what are the new administrative activities that result.
  • Methods for presenting research data to the public.
  • The longer term strategic vision for research portal projects.
  • The role a research portal should play in the RQF
About the presenters: Ken Richardson is the Executive Officer (Research) at The University of Queensland. He has worked in research management for the past ten years following a shorter career in librarianship.
