Abstract

Staff in the Research Centre for Clinical and Community Practice Innovation (RCCCPI) at Griffith University came to the conclusion they needed better data management practices to preserve research data and to enable better re-use of data in the future. The Centre has
over fifty researchers involved in Centre activities involving University staff and external collaborators. With some help from the eResearch Support Services Unit in the Division of Information Services, an infrastructure grant was obtained to develop a data laboratory for population health and health services research. The purpose of this laboratory is to:

  • Link datasets in a meaningful and useable way to increase research capacity.
  • Provide quality assurance through feedback to data providers and researchers.
  • Provide a coordinated single point of access to health-related data.
  • Facilitate population and health services research based on sound data.
  • Facilitate collaboration between health, social and urban planning researchers.
  • Facilitate collaboration with partner investigators and policy-makers.
  • Increase e-research capacity.

The solution developed paid special attention to the research lifecycle and relies heavily on agreed metadata and controlled vocabularies being used in various stages of the cycle such as during:

  • data capture (e.g. surveys - online, audio and hardcopy),
  • data cleansing and analysis,
  • collaboration and pre-publication processes, document versioning and management, and

  • publication of research in articles and underlying data in journals, as content on public websites, or for storage in long term repositories

Along the way, hardware has been replaced or upgraded, open standards adopted, taxonomies and controlled vocabularies introduced and relevant metadata collected to assist building a rich data repository to facilitate long term re-use and easy discovery of research information.

This presentation will cover the methods, tools and technologies used to develop this solution and identify learnings for future deployments.
