VeRSI Annual Survey

VeRSI are again conducting their Annual Survey, throughout November. The survey collects information about awareness of VeRSI activities but also information about eResearch more generally. The survey is anonymous and all feedback is appreciated.

AARNet releases pilot "CloudStor" service – Large File Transfer platform

Following interest from our members, AARNet in collaboration with UniNett and HEANet (the Norwegian and Irish research networks) have developed a large file transfer service. These large files might be large datasets generated in a research workflow, or they might be a hefty PowerPoint full of pictures and animations that you want to share with a program committee at another uni. Most email systems limit attachment sizes to a few megabytes making it impossible to send large files through them. Also, increasingly many firewalls restrict "traditional" file transfer methods such as FTP. Security might be an issue for you as well, making you wary of putting the file on public webspace.

CloudStor is hosted on AARNet natively, and allows the user to securely upload files to a central storage point. They can then distribute via email a unique URL to a list of recipients to allow the download of their file. So far, testing has confirmed the ability to upload files of up to 30 Gbytes and potentially greater, and there is of course no limitation on how small the files can be.

All file transfers are done over HTTP so there is no need to open additional ports on your firewall. Right now we are looking for interested individuals who would be willing to test the capabilities of the pilot service. They will be given a personal logon to the service allowing them to upload files themselves and issue upload vouchers to others. If you are interested, please get in touch with guido.aben@aarnet.edu.au

Should the service prove to be robust and meeting the needs of those who participate in the pilot, it will be made more broadly available to the Research and Education Community before the end of 2009.

Underworld of Monash Sun Grid now on ARCS Grid

AuScope 'Simulation, Analysis, Modelling' Victoria (AuScope SAM Vic) (http://www.auscope.monash.edu.au/) , the Monash e-Research Centre (MeRC) (http://www.monash.edu.au/eresearch/) and the Australian Research Collaboration Service (ARCS) (http://www.arcs.org.au/) have worked together to make the Monash Sun Grid (MSG) facility and its latest Underworld installation accessible on the ARCS Grid. Underworld (http://www.underworldproject.org/) geodynamics software is under collaborative development by Monash University (http://www.monash.edu.au/) and the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing (http://www.vpac.org/) as part of AuScope SAM Vic. Monash Underworld users, including those arising from the ‘Underworld Grid Workshop’ in June, can now submit compute jobs to the MSG using the ARCS Grid submission client Grisu. This enhances the already strong grid presence held by Monash University through the Monash eScience and Grid Engineering (MeSsAGE) Laboratory (http://www.messagelab.monash.edu.au/), which performs research and development on software tools and techniques for programming e-Science applications. Users of other codes at Monash University are invited to contact MeRC to discuss grid-enabling their code.

Enquiries can be made to:
AuScope ‘Simulation, Analysis, Modelling’ Victoria: Steve Quenette, Project Director, steve@vpac.org (0438 558 275), or Wendy Mason, Underworld e-Research Officer, wendy.mason@sci.monash.edu.au (03 9905 1120)
Monash e-Research Centre: Prof. Paul Bonnington, Director, Paul.Bonnington@adm.monash.edu.au (03 9902 0711)
Australian Research Collaboration Service: Prof. Anthony Williams, ARCS Executive Director, anthony.williams@arcs.org.au (08 8303 3546)
