Visualization Challenge -- A$5,000 prize.  Enter by 6 October!

The eResearch Australasia conference is proud to introduce the annual eResearch Visualization Challenge. The challenge invites researchers, students, practitioners, and educators from diverse disciplines to submit visualizations on a given theme. This year's theme is financial markets; the challenge is sponsored by SIRCA with a data set provided by Thomson Reuters. Entries will be displayed at the conference, and a prize of A$5,000 will be awarded for the winning entry.

The eResearch Visualization Challenge aims to harvest the best examples of meaningful (as opposed to purely artistic) visualizations around an annual theme, to raise the bar for the documentation and communication of the process applied to generate those visualizations, and to sensitize people to the importance of visualization for formal and informal education and the communication of information.

Please see www.eresearch.edu.au/vischallenge  for more information. Don't miss out!  Entries are due by 6 October 2009.

iVEC Training in Advanced Computing

This month iVEC has taken over 30 participants through training sessions on developing and scaling parallel applications and managing research data. Facilitators of the course included Dr Chris Hines, Dr Daniel Grimwood, Valerie Maxville, Luke Edwards, Ankur Sharda and Rob Mollard - members of iVEC's staff supporting computational science and eResearch in WA. The iVEC courses are continually evolving and include material on ANDS and ARCS to help map out the resources available to researchers.

To find out more about our programs, please contact Valerie Maxville at education@ivec.org  or visit http://ivec.org/education.

New project to manage data from next-generation gene sequencing equipment

Intersect has kicked off its next Innovation Project: the "Genomic Data Project". Use of next-generation gene sequencing is growing rapidly in Australia. Several institutions already have these sequencers and others are set to acquire them. Intersect, in collaboration with the Systems Biology Initiative, the Ramaciotti Centre at UNSW, the Centre for Plant Conservation Genetics at the Southern Cross University and the Australian National University is building eResearch infrastructure to assist sequencer users manage the huge volumes of data generated.

Intersect is interested in working with others who may be in a similar situation to avoid duplication of effort. If you are using similar technology, are interested in being involved in, or using the outcomes of the project, please contact Chris Mendes at chris.mendes@intersect.org.au

BCEES helps define new ARCS service

An identified problem for collaborative research projects is the difficulty in obtaining access and support for custom ICT infrastructure. ARCS has been able to provide a virtual machine hosting service that can make ICT services more flexible for research groups. The Breast Cancer Environment and Employment Study (BCEES – see www.bcees.org.au) has helped ARCS to define a new service for providing Virtual Machines (VM’s) that deliver customised environments and is successfully using this service.

BCEES is a three year study being carried out by an international team of researchers led by Professor Lin Fritschi of the Western Australian Institute of Medical Research (WAIMR). The study looks at the role of exposures at work and in the community as risk factors for breast cancer. BCEES aims to investigate some of these exposures and to improve the strategies for prevention of breast cancer.

ARCS has assisted BCEES by providing an application hosting environment to host their web site and their on-line survey and data collection applications. The BCEES project team have access to a remote virtual machine that allows them to run their given software and development tools without the concern of maintenance, redundancy, and support costs of the physical hardware.
