Recent advances in web-based graphical information systems (GIS) provide organisations with new opportunities for getting decision useful information and data into an environment where it can be shared with and accessed by organisations and members of the general public. A feasibility study conducted by the University of Ballarat during 2005 reviewed technology options, privacy implications and organisational collaborative models. It included a series of recommendations which have broadly informed recent implementation activities. This poster will illustrate the emerging area of web-based GIS and in particularly the outcomes which can be achieved once interoperability between different data managers and datasets is achieved. Data implementation activities using ground water, landslide and erosion information will demonstrate how the interoperative web-based GIS has been applied in the South West region of Victoria. Opportunities for further expansion of the platform will be presented as the basis for further discussion.
