Abstract

Johns Hopkins University (JHU) has launched an Institute for Data Intensive Science and Engineering (IDIES) that serves as a coordinating entity for the various eResearch activities within the University. JHU has established a leadership role in eResearch through exemplar projects such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Virtual Observatory (VO). Through IDIES, researchers and digital librarians will explore the potential for transferring tools and technologies across different disciplines, including the social sciences and humanities.

One of the key components of IDIES is data curation. The Digital Research and Curation Center (DRCC) of the Sheridan Libraries at JHU leads the development efforts toward a data curation infrastructure that will preserve and support use, re-use, and unanticipated use of eResearch data. Working with the VO, the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and its publishing partner, the DRCC is developing a prototype data curation that brings together digital archives, electronic publishing systems, and research collaboration frameworks such as the VO.

The DRCC is working with an international network of partners, including the Australian National Data Service (ANDS), Monash University, the Australian National University, and the University of Queensland, to develop robust, comprehensive data curation infrastructure that will support a range of eResearch use cases. Even at this early stage in its development, there are important lessons learned that will be shared as part of this presentation.

About the speaker

G. Sayeed Choudhury is the Associate Dean for Library Digital Programs and Hodson Director of the Digital Research and Curation Center at the Sheridan Libraries of Johns Hopkins University. He serves as principal investigator for projects funded through the US National Science Foundation, Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. He has oversight for the digital library activities and services provided by the Sheridan Libraries at Johns Hopkins University.

Choudhury has published articles in the International Journal of Digital Curation, D-Lib, the Journal of Digital Information and First Monday. He has served on committees for the Digital Curation Conference, Open Repositories, Joint Conference on Digital Libraries, and Web-Wise. He has presented at various conferences including Educause, the Coalition for Networked Information, the US Digital Library Federation, the American Library Association, and the US/Canadian Association of Research Libraries.
