Abstract

This talk is based in part on a survey carried out for APSR and APAC in 2006, which led to the AERES report (http://www.apsr.edu.au/publications/projects.htm) The survey looked at the issues surrounding the management and preservation of a large range of research data collections, at a broad range of institutions (universities, CSIRO, government bodies). Some of the issues are technical and have some interesting problems and opportunities. Some of the issues are policy related and deeply interwoven. Many of them can be solved with some collaborative development efforts, and strategic guidance of our organisations and our users.

About the speaker

Markus has a long and winding history in the e-research space, having swapped from the light side of astronomy to the dark side of IT many years ago. He has worked with a very diverse range of user communities, disciplines and ICT providers, including national and international network links (GrangeNet, AARNet, APAN, Internet2 and beyond), high performance compute and data providers (APAC and partners), as well as heading up the ANU Internet Futures program. ANU-IF was an e-research support program started in 2002, which focussed on network and middleware services, collaboration technologies and data management. More recently he has been deeply involved in national programs such as APSR, other SII-funded programs, and NCRIS.
