eResearch infrastructure relies heavily on the development and integration of software to provide core services to researchers. Software development projects famously run over time and over budget and often do not meet the intended goals of the stakeholders.
This workshop explores the tools and techniques for delivering software development projects that meet the goals of stakeholders to agreed timeframes and budgets.

Outline

  1. The role of Project Management. What is the role of the project manager? Is she the decision maker, the boss, the paperwork handler? This talk expalins why project management is really about communication, facilitation and leadership.

  2. Capturing project goals and scope. Why is it important to capture project goals and scope? Some common tools and techniques will be explored.
    60 minutes
  3. Communication and Reporting. Why is communication so important? What tools can project managers use to help facilitate communication? Communicating project status meaningfully.
    75 minutes
  4. Understanding project risk. Unmanaged risk is the biggest killer of projects. This session will provide simple tools and techniques for managing risk.

  5. Choosing the methodology. Explores basic logic behind choosing a methodology.

  6. Estimation and Scheduling. Practical hints about estimating the size of a project and creating a schedule.
    60 minutes
  7. Project Execution. The project manager’s role during project execution. Tracking real progress, tracking and managing risk, re-planning.

About the presenters

Chris Mendes. Chris is the Director of Engineering at Intersect. Chris Mendes has over 15 years experience managing commercial technology development. Chris has worked across many sectors including banking and finance, control systems and consumer product
development. Most recently, Chris was General Manager of a Research and Development division at CiSRA, Canon's R&D centre in Australia. He graduated with a BSc majoring in Computer Science and a BE in Electrical Engineering (Hons) from the University of Sydney in the late 80s and has since worked in commercial R&D roles.
Elaine Gully. Elaine is the Project Manager at Intersect. Elaine has an extensive IT background. She has worked most recently for Qantas on a large Oracle financials project. She has also worked for a large shared services organisation servicing a number of NSW Government agencies providing HR, IT and finance solutions and services. Elaine has a BSc Degree in Computer Systems and Software Engineering from the University of Limerick in Ireland and is also a certified PRINCE2 Practitioner.
Alan Glixman is the Projects Administrator for the National eResearch Architecture Taskforce. He has 25 years experience working in commercial IT environments. For the last 10 years he has assisted in the running of project offices and programme management offices overseeing a wide range of both IT and non-IT projects. Alan has a BSc in Computer Science from UNSW.
