Date and time
Monday 9 November, 13:30 - 17:00.
Description
ANDS, Monash University, QUT and CSIRO invite you to share and discuss your experiences at this workshop on supporting data management within your institution. Come along and meet others with common interests.
Universities and other research institutions are increasingly recognising the need to support researchers in identifying, managing and keeping track of the data they create and use.
This trend comes as a response to a number factors including:
- the newly developed data management requirements of the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research;
- recognition of the value of research data and the benefits to researchers of sharing data through increased citation and research impact;
- the need to ensure that research funding obligations are met;
- the need to improve data management within institutions, of both data being created and third party data from other sources;
- the potential to contribute metadata describing data collections to Research Data Australia, a discovery service developed by the Australian National Data Service (ANDS);
- growing recognition of the importance of data sharing and re-use across discipline and institutional boundaries, and the role which Research Data Australia plays in this; and
- increasing understanding of the practical, legal and IP issues associated with a lifecycle approach to data management.
This workshop will showcase some of the models emerging in different institutions in undertaking this task. No two of the emerging models are the same, with different parts of the institution taking a lead role in developing policy and procedures, and different mechanisms being used to develop strategies and carry out tasks.
Speakers will include representatives of Monash University, CSIRO, the Queensland University of Technology, Griffith University and the University of Newcastle. There will be plenty of time for discussion around all the issues identified.

About the presenters
Paula Callan is the eResearch Access Coordinator at Queensland University of Technology and is a member of the University’s eResearch Committee. Paula’s position is based in the Library but she is working closely with staff from the HPC (High Performance Computing) Section of IT Services to develop and implement a range of eResearch support services and training programs. Paula’s focus is on the development of digital repository services, copyright management and the effective management of research data. Paula is a member of the University’s eResearch Working Group.
Vicki Picasso is the Manager of the NOVA Research Repository at the University of Newcastle and in her position works collaboratively with Research Services on information and data management issues relating to the University’s research publications and research data. Vicki implemented the University’s research repository through the RUBRIC (Regional Universities Building Research Infrastructure Collaboratively) Project and participated in the Australian Research Repositories Online to the World (ARROW) Project. Vicki’s current role includes liaison and co-ordination of the University’s engagement with the Australian National Data Service (ANDS).
Gerry Ryder has a broad range of experience across a number of information management related fields. She has provided reference and information literacy services to clients across a number of disciplines, implemented a web standards compliance project, co-ordinated scientific outreach events and publications, assisted with records management processes and championed the implementation of collaborative tools such as MS SharePoint. More recently, Gerry was a member of the CSIRO Information Management & Technology project team that developed a framework for delivery of a Data Management Service across CSIRO. In her current role, Gerry is leading the implementation of CSIRO’s Data Advisory Service which is a key component of the Data Management Service.
Robyn Rebollo is the eResearch Specialist (Information Management) for Research Computing Services at Griffith University. Robyn has over fourteen years experience in information management, online research, library technologies and vendor relations.
